Week 3 Assignment

The common theme shared by The Enlightenment with the open source and OER movements is the concept of freedom. freedom of independent thought and advances in scientific inquiry through rationalism and empiricism challenged the repressive oligarchies of religion and the nobility is seen during The Enlightenment,.In a parallel socioeconomic sense, the open source software movement is challenging the proprietary model of software development and its profit-driven hold on most sectors of the global economy. As the open source movement continues to successfully offer consumers greater freedom and choice, similar potential can be imagined for the OER movement. Perhaps the OER movement will continue to gain momentum and become a revolutionary catalyst for intellectual fulfillment and self-determination.

The OSS development model is a distributed peer reviewed system of collaborative social constructivism. Open source software projects are organized as non-discriminatory meritocracies. New members/developers enter projects and work in an apprentice-like telecommuting arrangement under the watch of the project leaders. Developers must demonstrate skill and commitment in order to rise to positions of higher trust within the project community. All contributions are tested before being accepted by the community.

The Wikipedia Popular Education article TARGETS on empowerment through education. The OER movement aims to empower individuals who wish to contribute to or access educational resources without barriers. Self-directed study appeals to many people for a variety of reasons. The accessibility and flexibility of OER are attractive features for global learners. Popular education now must appeal to international as well as local interests. A casual, self-directed learning style similar to non-credit adult education courses and folk high schools is possible through OER study.

Steps Documentation

I have discovered that open online educational resource materials are very important in this world of globalization. The person to use should have knowledge concerning basics of internet and computer applications in general. The idea of internet connectivity is inevitable to everyone to use materials. Hereunder are the steps I have taken when passing through materials in LeMill and Wikiversity platforms, especially in completing my assignment
1. I went to LeMill and Wikiversity to explore what are they.
2. I registered to LeMill and posted my information there.
3. I joined one of the projets in LeMill and edited the contents
4. I posted in my blog (ofcourse is now this you are reading) the steps to answer my assignment and explain the experience I have on LeMill and Wikiversity.
Thank You!!

Concerning LeMill & Wikiversity

This is how I can describe the two that, Wikiversity is devoted to open educational resources and MIT’S OPENCOURSEWARE being initiative to create open educational resources. Its content is released under a “non-commercial” (NC) Creative Commons licence, however, its work has sparked a movement, and this has begun to involve many other universities - under the OPENCOURSEWARE CONSORTIUM. Some of this content is released under NC licences, but many of it is being made more free. Content can be made progressively more free - so something that is released under a non-commercial licence can be relicenced with more freedoms
On the other hand, LeMill is a good example of a repository of resources - findable, remixable etc - but what’s really nice is their separation between learning: content, methods and tools. LeMill is trying to make explicit the different ways in which a subject can be taught and learned, and what tools (software) can be used to do so. The two sites above have well-organised means of searching and tagging.
I hope the with that short experience with Lemill and Wikiversity expose the way they are. Thanks

Open Education Projects

These projects are focusing on providing educational materials for free online so that a big number of people can use them wherever they are. The blogs/webs of these projects give a chance for user to register then have all the benefits of the platform such as searching materials, asking questions, see various posts by other professionals. Different topics have been set so that is very easy to access. These kind of projects are vital in educational prosperity in the globe.

About the OER

The Open & free Educational Resources are materials found online for sharing which are made to suit a particular group of field. They assure quality education and educational practises. They support teachers to create and adapt the teaching materials and other tools. Normally with OER the source code is open for others to edit and use. It gives a room for manipulation, modification and other innovative amendments. With this modern world of globalization the OER is a good tool for learning
